How do you overcome loneliness when you are all alone? I am 32 and single, and sometimes I feel depressed when I don’t know what to do in my free time. How can you be so peaceful, confident and happy all the time?
from Victoria
Dear Victoria,
Thank you for writing. You’ve asked a very good question because many single people struggle with loneliness. To be honest, I am so busy that I rarely have time to feel lonely. I use my free time to read, keep up with current
events, and be with good friends. If you can find something fulfilling to do, you will feel less lonely. Maybe you could volunteer to help someone in need. Also, spend time with people you enjoy. Maybe you can find someone who also has an interest in English, or perhaps make friends through a church group.
Lastly, my peace and joy come from God. He fills my life with abundant blessings.
Best Wishes,

I am only in third grade. Is it too early to start learning English?
from Mei Ying Tsai
Dear Mei Ying,
It has been proven that it is easier for children to learn a language than adults. Children can make the sounds better and talk in a natural way. So, this is a perfect time for you to learn English. Don’t worry too much about the grammar. Just read out loud to your parents or even to yourself. And don’t forget to review. Also, play games and watch good videos in English. Enjoy yourself while you learn!

How do I know if I am making the right decision?
from Kelly Hsu
Dear Kelly,
Thank you for your question. One of the first principles to remember
is to make decisions based on the standards you live by and not on what is going on around you. Don’t compromise your standards for other people. You should have firm beliefs and make them your guide. If you are being asked to do something that goes against those beliefs, then evaluate the situation carefully and choose wisely. Think about how your decision will affect your future, not just today or tomorrow.

My listening is quite poor; therefore, I have difficulty in listening and understanding what the teachers say in the program. Please tell me what I can do. Thanks.
from Claire
Dear Claire,
Thank you for your letter.
1. First, read along out loud with the teachers so you become used to
speaking English.
2. And then see if you can answer the questions the teachers ask before they give the answers — try to use the new vocabulary that you learn each day.
3. Practice saying the new vocabulary in front of a mirror and read the example sentences out loud — talk to yourself. Then make up your own sentence with the new word.
4. Encourage your family or friends to listen also, and practice with them. You could also get a telephone friend that you can speak English with.
5. Set a goal of speaking 10 minutes a day — you will notice improvement
very soon!!

Why should I study English if I don't work for an international company?
from Helen Hsu
Why should I study English if I don't work for an
international company?
I can think of several reasons for you to study English even though you may not be using it in your job right now. First of all, you never know when an opportunity may arise for you to
represent your company at an international event or meeting. If you
are not prepared, it will be too late and you will probably lose the chance. Second, the latest news and technology are always available in English first. If you want to be well-informed and keep up in this world, it is really necessary to have some English ability. There is no time like now to start! |

What is the best way to improve my English?
from John Wu
Dear John,
In the simplest terms, read more. Read lots of different kinds of things – short stories, graded readers of the classics, magazines, comic books, anything you like. When you read, you learn not only new vocabulary but also new sentence patterns. You can see how English is used naturally. But don't forget to use what you read and learn. The new vocabulary or sentence structure will not really belong to you unless you use it! So, don't be afraid to talk out loud.
